David and I are BIG Indian fans. When we first met and were dating we used to eat Indian a lot. Our favourite restaurant was Tulsi on Baggot Street which has now closed down :-(
We haven't had Indian for a while now (even takeaway in the house) so we planned as a treat that we would go into town for a curry over Christmas.
Hard to choose where to go but seeing as we have the Hi-Life card we said we would go somewhere that they accepted this and we could get a bit of a bill reduction.
Spice of India, on South William Street, is "ok" decorated. This photograph probably looks better than it is in real life. Personally I think they should play up the Indian and do darker more patterned walls.
So while initially we were going to go a la carte and get just mains (on the hi-life!) when we saw the fixed menu offer they had on we said we would just go for that. David was particularly interested in this when he saw shish kebabs as a starter - while he originally only wanted a main - he just loves shish!
Before we even ordered we were served with some nice poppodums and chutneys. Nyom.
David's starters of shish kebab. I didn't try these. I am never actually mad about shish, but as I said David loves them, and these ones he said were very nice.
I got chicken pakora. Which when I ordered I immediately regretted. They were noted on the menu as "appropriate for kids" and I though "oh no, theses are just going to be chicken nuggets!!!!!!"
But they were not. Nice light delicately spiced batter, very nice indeed.
Mains!
David ordered a chicken bhuna which he said was very tasty.
I ordered a chicken tikka masala. It was described as mild on the menu so I upped the spice level, past medium, on to HOT! I love spicy food.
It was divine - lovely creamy and flavourful and kicky at the same time!
When the food arrived I thought it looked a bit small. But surprisingly we both could not finish it all, and I got mine packed to go - snack this evening or lunch tomorrow!
Total for 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 rice, 1 naan, 2 cokes: €29.15
Tip: €5
Parking: €2.90
Under €40 for a lovely afternoon. Good value and good food. All in all a nice afternoon.
